In the news: Israelis Share Nobel Prize in Science

Two Israelis and an American won the 2004 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for helping to understand how the human body gives the "kiss of death" to faulty proteins to defend itself from diseases like cancer. Israelis Aaron Ciechanover, 57, Avram Hershko, 67 - the first Israelis to win a chemistry prize - and American Irwin Rose, 78, were honored by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for their work in the 1980s that discovered one of the cell's most important cyclical processes, regulated protein degradation. Lars Thelander of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry said the trio's work was highly relevant for cancer research. Ciechanover said it had already "led to development of numerous drugs for degenerative diseases and malignancies that big pharmaceutical companies are busy working on." All three will share the 10 million kronor ($1.3 million) cash prize. In a conference call with the academy after the prize was announced, Ciechanover said the process would help introduce new medicines that can fight cancer and other diseases. He also said he was overwhelmed at winning the prize.

"From Terrorist to Zionist" Rescheduled for December 13

More than 450 people emailed or called in an RSVP for the Walid Shoebat program "From Terrorist to Zionist", originally scheduled for September 27. Unfortunately, Hurricane Jeanne had other plans on that weekend and our speaker was unable to make it to the bay area. As you may recall, Walid Shoebat was born in Bethlehem in 1960, where he was taught to hate Jews and Israel. Growing up, he participated in anti-Israel riots and lynch mobs as a member of the terrorist group, Fatah. Today, Walid has dedicated himself to denouncing Arab anti-Semitism and speaking out in defense of the Jewish people's right to the land of Israel.. The A Team and the Pinellas County JCC are proud to announce that a hurricane-free date of December 13 @ 7:00 pm has been restablished for this exciting, can’t-miss event. Please email your new RSVP to ateam@tampabay.rr.com or call the CBI office at 727.381-4900.
